Already home to the world’s tallest air traffic control tower and the world’s largest commercial aircraft hangar, Bangkok’s Subarnabhumi International Airport has now unveiled the planet’s largest ground run-up enclosure (GRE).
At 11,000sqm, the new GRE at Subarnabhumi International Airport is designed to accommodate aircraft as large as the A380 and is intended to reduce the impact of ground run–up noise on the communities surrounding the airport.
The three-sided noise enclosure, constructed by Blast Deflectors Inc (BDI), incorporates a number of acoustic and aerodynamic features that aid noise reduction during the run-up process, which is performed largely during aircraft maintenance.
Don Bergin, director of technical sales for BDI, said: “Run-ups create significant noise levels and can last for extended periods of time. At an airport with as many MRO operations as Bangkok, a GRE is the best way to satisfy the needs of both aircraft operators and the communities surrounding the airport.”
